biography
Kim Oanh Nguyen is a freelance photographer based in Portland, Oregon. She specializes in wedding, editorial, fashion and art photography.
Kim was born in Laos and lived there until 1978. Her family came to the United States in 1980.
Kim's love for photography started when she was introduced to the family camera by her older brother. She was 13 and her first subject was her grandmother. At the time her grandmother was 80 and Kim continued to take her grandmother's portrait every year. It became a running joke that her grandmother would always wear her best for the occasion and insist that this portrait should be used at her funeral should she pass away.
By 2004 (18 grandmother portraits later) Kim had graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in journalism and communication, worked for several daily and weekly newspapers and Citysearch Portland, helped launch Citysearch Seattle & Denver and was now happily working as a freelance photographer which she continues to do to this day. Her grandmothers also saw her wish come true that year although Kim used the 1st portrait instead of the 18th.
Her work has taken her from the US to Asia to Europe and many wonderful places in between. She employs the idea that beauty may be found in everyone and everywhere and promotes cross-cultural understanding though the images she captures.
Within her art photography Kim seeks to provide a catalogue of imagery that aim to enhance the aesthetic of our surroundings. They are to be reflected upon and enjoyed by the individual with the notion that his or her interpretation is as important as anyone else’s. Kim makes no claims towards their intention beyond what they represent to those individuals. Please feel free to share your thoughts with her.
In 2004 Kim traveled to the Philippines with a reporter to cover a story that changed her life. She spent two weeks documenting the lives of orphaned street children and the people who help them. The images she captured during this trip show the immense inequality but also the joy found in the lives of these orphaned children.

Portland Saturday (and Sunday) Market
Every Saturday and Sunday (March - December) under the Burnside Bridge between SW Naito Parkway and SW 1st Ave.
Saturday 10 - 5pm & Sundays 11 - 4.30pm.
Although Kim and Kjell set up as much as they can they can't guarantee to be there every Saturday and Sunday. So be sure check back here or sign up for our newsletter in order to avoid disappointment.

Every last thursday of the month (April - September) on NE Alberta St.
You can find Kim and her husband Kjell set up in one of two spots: outside Close Knit on NE 21st and NE Alberta or outside The Know on NE 20th and NE Alberta. We are usually there from about 4pm - 10pm.

June 2006 ~ PSU Roots festival
Organised by PSU the Roots festival is a day long celebration of diversity that will commemorate people's origins, cultures, and commonalities, as well as respected differences. Kim and Kjell will be set up alongside other artists, vendors and musicians in the Park Blocks from 1pm to 5pm. For more info on Roots festival please visit www.pdx.edu.
